Alright all you workaholics, put the laptop down or at least off your lap. Why you might ask, well there is a new skin issue that may be attributed to your high-tech pal.
Skin discoloration can appear on any part of your body, not just your face. The sun is still the number one cause of skin discoloration but recently there is a high-tech culprit behind the rise in leg-specific discoloration – your laptop!
Erythema ab igne, also known as toasted skin syndrome, is caused by an overexposure to a heat source without an actual burn. At first dermatologists were stumped by this red, brown sponge-like rash appearing on their patients’ thighs but after some simple research there was one common factor – long periods of laptop use.
Most manufactures include warnings in their user manual but if you are like me you probably never opened the thing But I had no idea that some device can get over 100 degrees, multiply that by a couple of hours of web surfing and you could definitely do some damage.
Although the name may sound a little silly, it can cause permanent skin damage and although it has not been directly linked to skin cancer, it can cause damage that can lead to squamous cell skin cancer.
So what’s a girl to do in this high-tech world? It’s simple really – just make sure there is always a barrier between you and your laptop (carrying case, tray, etc).
