Fight dragon’s breath naturally

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Okay, so I am not admitting to anything but all of us at one time or another has not had the freshest breath on the planet

But while bad breath can mostly be cured with a mint or piece of gum, continuous cases of ‘dragon breath’ can lead to serious health problems.

Here are the top natural ways to combat bad breath:

  • Good mouth hygiene. Brushing and flossing twice a day promotes a clean, healthy mouth
  • Drink plenty of water. Bad breath is caused by anaerobic bacteria that break down protein and sugar into other compounds, which create a foul smell. That bacteria thrives on dry conditions so by drinking water frequently you create a bitter environment for them.
  • Avoid most commercial mouthwashes. Many commercial mouthwashes contain large amount of alcohol. Alcohol leads to dry mouth.
  • Elicit some herbal help. Many herbs have antibiotic characteristics. Parsley and aloe vera are the best. Chewing parsley not only detoxifies your mouth but it also contains abundant chlorophyll which sweetens your breath.
  • Eat crisp fruits and vegetables.

How do you keep your kisser fresh? Do you use any of the tips above, let us know what works best for you………………

Aromatherapy aids Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most studied diseases that still has no cure - only medication that can reduce the symptoms or make coping with the disease more bearable.

There is another “medication” you can now add to that list, but you don’t need a prescription for it – aromatherapy. Some oils are used on their own or blended together to support specific needs like: relaxation, anxiety, mind stimulation, sleep support and appetite stimulation.

More than 450 nursing facilities incorporate some type of aromatherapy with their Alzheimer’s or dementia patients. There have been several studies published showing how essential oil blends, formulated for use with those patients, have improved their quality of life, reduced their dependence on pharmaceutical medications, and improved the attendance of their caregivers.

Not only do essential oils help the patient, research shows they also help the caregiver too, especially those who take care of family members combating the horrible disease.

Other symptoms that have been successfully addressed with essential oils:

  • Sleeplessness – lavender works well at reducing stress and anxiety and promotes a calmer mood
  • Memory enhancement
  • Appetite stimulation – lemon, lime, nutmeg, clove and ginger are known to stimulate the appetite as well as help with the memory
  • Pain
  • Infection control
  • Wound care
  • Palliative care

Put some bacteria in my sunscreen, please!

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Hope y’all had a great weekend - back to work here on this lovely, fall Monday. That’s right it feels like fall has trickled down to Texas

Even though the heat of the summer is slowly giving way to cool fall nights, sunscreen is essential all year round. In the natural body care industry it can be difficult to find natural ingredients and formulations that can do the same thing as their man-made counterparts.

Well chalk another one up for nature, sunscreen may be able to be formulated with completely natural or naturally occurring ingredients now.

In a study published this month, scientists from the Harvard Medical School discovered a bacteria that may hold the key to developing a new generation of truly organic sunscreen.

What you might ask could naturally protect us from those cancer-causing rays? Its is more common than you think – Cyanobacteria, an ancient fresh water bacteria found in thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of lakes throughout the world.

The Harvard team discovered that this bacteria has evolved over billions of years to produce its own filtering and protection from damaging UV rays.

This protection has evolved to combat both UVA and UVB exposure by producing small amounts of small-molecule sunscreens called mycosporines and mycosporine which absorb harmful rays.

Not only does cyanobacteria have a natural sunscreen filter, it contains a number of B vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin A, lipids and essential amino acids.

According to the scientists, the extract has the petrochemical properties needed to make a protective sunscreen but has not been formulated by any skin care company for that specific reason. Although the extract has been used for years in an anti-aging skin care product manufactured by a Swiss company and in an eye gel sold in the U.S it has yet to be developed as a sunscreen ingredient.

Would you use a sunscreen made from bacteria?

Dramatic colors out, flawless, natural beauty in!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

I absolutely love a dramatic pigment when it comes to eyeshadow for a night out on the town but everyday color is a different story

Last week Neutrogena released results from a national survey they conduct, which found that American women expect their cosmetics to “deliver flawless skin and sun protection over fashion-forward colors.”

Not only did the survey find this new trend toward flawless, protected beauty - more than half of respondents over the age of 55 said their biggest selling point is anti-aging products that minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Here are some other interesting results:

  • ‘Flawless skin tone’ was the number one response for all women in choosing their cosmetics
  • Regardless of age, products which enhanced your skin with either vitamins, minerals or other ingredients were chosen ahead of more traditional makeup staples like elongated lashes (8% of women wanted), full-looking lips (3%) and defined cheekbones (2%)
  • Fifty-six percent of American women wear makeup with an SPF
  • Forty-two percent of women said if they had to choose between makeup and breakfast when pressed for time before work, they would choose to apply makeup.

Let’s here it ladies, what do you think about this survey? Are you in the majority or minority?

Update on Safe Cosmetics Act 2010

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Hey y’all it has been a while since we have discussed the pending Safe Cosmetics Act before the House of Representatives. Congress began their session this month so I wanted to revamp the discussions on the bill and its potential to seriously cripple beauty brands just like Scandle.

I also wanted to welcome our new followers this month and take the time to acquaint them with this very important legislation. The Safe Cosmetics Act was introduced in July amid criticism of ingredients and lack of labeling on personal care products.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is one of the biggest pushers of this bill that will “overhaul the law that allows chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, or other illnesses in the products we use on our bodies every day.” The problem with this statement is the Campaign has been accused several times of using faulty science, scare tactics and baseless claims to link certain chemicals to these health claims.

Not only is the science behind this bill lacking, the legislation would require every personal care business, including smaller beauty brands like Scandle that already practice safe cosmetics and natural ingredient formulation, to pay for independent testing, labeling and research that can drive a smaller business out of revenue.

For more information, please read these great articles that break the Act down better:

This Act effects all of us in the beauty industry - the independent natural beauty producers, the bloggers and media outlets that review independent beauty products and the consumers that make an effort to buy natural, quality personal care products.

Is your beauty bag ready for fall?

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Fall officially begins on Wednesday and if you in Texas like us it sure doesn’t feel like it yet

But if it feels like it or not where you live, every time the seasons change, your beauty routine should too.

Every season calls for different skin care - higher SPFs in the summer and higher moisturizers in the winter.

Since it is still in the 90s here, we have a little more time to get our beauty bag into fall shape, but if you up north here are some tips and tricks to guide you and your skin into a glowing fall:

  • As the weather gets colder, switch to a heavier moisturizing cream to combat the drying affects of colder air. Try to apply your moisturizer when your face is still a little wet, this locks in even more moisture.
  • Avoid hot baths and showers, even though it might be extremely tempting. Also, this is a trick I learned from my mommy back in the day – rub in your lotion as soon as you step out of the shower. It really does help keep you skin soft and silky in the winter.
  • Your nails are likely to become brittle as the weather changes. Avoid fast drying nail polishes as they contain isopropyl alcohol (IPA) which causes them to become even more brittle and flaky. Also, moisturize them with products that contain Shea butter or jojoba – Scandle’s Helping Hands Treatment Kit has spa gloves and a Healing Blend travel tin to lock in moisture.
  • For more tips and tricks, visit our winter hair care and winter skin care posts.

Is the weather changing in your neck of the woods yet? How to you spice up your fall beauty routine?

Quinoa - Mother Nature’s deep conditioner

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

If you are not familiar with the amino acid-rich seed which has a fluffy, slightly crunchy texture, then let me introduce you to the protein - quinoa. Although it is not exactly a staple in the kitchen yet, as more people gravitate toward healthier living, more cooks are adding it to vegetarian dishes because of its high protein content.

While many consider quinoa a grain, it is actually a relative of leafy green vegetables like spinach and Swiss chard. It is a recently rediscovered ancient “grain” once considered “the gold of the Incas.”

Well, this is not a food blog so let me get to the point Quinoa is high in complete protein, meaning that it includes all nine essential amino acids. There is a new formulation in the works that uses quinoa as one of its main ingredients.

This new hair conditioning ingredient is designed to help hair retain moisture and repair damage left by chemical treatments (hair color, chemical straighteners, perms, etc).

This hydrolyzed protein from the South American grain Quinoa binds to the hair shaft and penetrates the cortex, helping to repair damage deep in the hair.

According to testing, after 5 treatments, the formulation showed a 32% improvement to the outside of the hair and a 26% reduction of damage inside the hair cortex.

While this new ingredient will primarily be used in hair care, it might eventually break into the skin care arena.

Are you a little rough on your hair (colors, straighteners, perms)? Would you try a product that is made from quinoa?

Massage reduces symptoms of “the change”

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

All women go through menopause at different stages of their lives – in fact almost every woman’s experience is different. The stereotypical “changes” are hot flashes, heart palpitations and sweating, but did you know that one of the main triggers of early menopause is stress?

We all go through this stage of life at different times but other factors such as lifestyle, diet, genetics and general health also play a role and the average “change” lasts about 4 years.

Well new research finds a link between massage and less intense menopause symptoms – making those 4 years a little less extreme. Regular massage therapy induces relaxation, decreases anxiety and depression – all necessary stress reducers.

Stress can not only kick you into an early menopause, the stress of actually going through it can impact the severity of your symptoms.

Menopause symptoms that can be reduced by regular massage:

  • Headaches
  • Joint and muscle aches
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

Have you used massage therapy to ease menopause symptoms? If not, would you?
