New research out this week has found a fast, cheap and effective treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer – tea tree oil.
If you haven’t used tea tree oil on insect bites you are missing out on a great, cheap and natural miracle worker. But now the commonly used oil has been found to shrink non-melanoma skin cancer in mice in one day and completly eliminate it within three days.
The University of Western Australia conducted the research and found that the oil may work by activating the body’s immune response to the skin cancer. Scientists believe that they can formulate a tea tree oil treatment to treat and possibly prevent some types of skin cancer.
Not only is a formulation like that a natural way to combat a cancer, the tea tree only produces a mild irritation to the skin which disappears within a couple of days. The alternative to tea tree oil is chemotherapy, which can have a long treatment time and can cause nausea and other symptoms.
Results from the three-year study by Dr Greay and Dr Demelza Ireland are published in the journal Cancer Chemotherapy Pharmacology; and a plan for a small clinical study on people with pre-cancerous lesions is in the developmental phase.
What do you think on this new portential cancer treatment? Got any other great uses for tea tree oil?

Hope y’all had a great, extended weekend and got to enjoy some rest, relaxation and holiday fun
I recently came across an article about the first hospital to ever use nontraditional therapies as a “prescribed” treatment to aid in patients pain management.
Nontraditional therapies like massage and acupuncture are now “prescribed” at a Minnesota hospital and the researchers published the first-of-its-kind findings in the recent Journal of Patient Safety.
This study is first scientific (aka doctor conducted and approved) study to prove the benefits of massage and acupuncture in treating pain.
Almost every doctor at the hospital now prescribes massage, acupuncture, and/or aromatherapy treatments to aid in pain reduction for their patients.
What could be better than adding in a “prescribed” massage to alleviate the pain and stress associated with a hospital?
What do you think of this not-so-new treatment?

Tea is an all-around “wonder drug” in the natural health and cosmetic industry. From Chamomile’s cosmetic properties, red tea’s huge antioxidant count and some tea-rific athome treatments, we have found yet another benefit - tea may help you burn more fat and calories.
Compounds in tea called catechins, which are flavonoid phytochemical compounds that appear predominantly in green tea, serve as a metabolism booster.
While the effects are moderate and drinking an extra cup of tea should certainly not be a replacement to a trip to the gym, who wouldn’t want to burn more calories while relaxing? I sure would

Last week summer season officially started and with the summer temperatures here, a new treatment is making tremendous stride in the spa. Are you bikini ready? Tanned, toned and ready to bare a little?
Well what about the intimate parts around your bikini? Did you get your facial? And no I don’t mean on your face
Bikini and bum treatments are the most popular new treatment this season in spas. This is different than just a body exfoliation treatment. Technicians deeply exfoliate ingrown hairs and clogged follicles around the derrière. Then the skin is steamed and all those bothersome ingrowns and acne blemishes are extracted.
In addition to the “facial” LED light therapy is used to treat sun and pigmentation spots left over from last bikini season.
If you want to get your own bikini facial but are a little strapped for extra cash or are just a little nervous of baring it all, you can try an at home version:
- Cleanse the area with a gentle, nonstripping wash
- Use a gentle scrub to eliminate the dead skin cells.
- After rinsing the scrub off, steam in a shower for 10-15 minutes
- Next, apply a soothing oatmeal mask (combine oatmeal, plain yogurt and honey and warm slightly in the microwave for a few seconds). Rinse after 10 minutes
- Apply your favorite, fragrance-free (to avoid any burning) lotion
What is your favorite pre-bikini treatment or product? Let us know…….

I don’t know about y’all but I can definitely tell when I am stressed. The headaches and the constant need for a massage tell me to slow down.
Well I thought I could always tell when I am stressed but I had no idea that my random eye twitching this week is a HUGE indicator of stress.
Here are some sneaky indicators that stress is having a significant impact on your daily routine:
- Eye twitching
- Cavities
- Rashes
- Nausea
- Sleepiness
- Forgetfulness
- Confusion
- And yes, ragged cuticles
So don’t let stress sneak up on you and reak havoc on your insides and outsides. For natural ways to combat stress, check out:

Last week, a new report was published about the recent decline in revenue for spas. While it has taken spas a long time to finally show signs of economic effect, many seem optimistic that the industry will rebound.
I thought it would be fun to look back on the beginnings of spas and their staying power!
Spas originated in Belgium in the 1500s and the term “spa” is associated with a type of water treatment known as “balneotherapy,” which is the treatment of disease by bathing.
The water treatment emerged from a small town in Belgium where illnesses were caused by a lack of iron in the water. People flocked to “spa towns” to drink spring water that contained chalybeate or iron.
One thing led to another and in 1571, William Slingsby discovered the medicinal effects of bathing in the Chalybeate spring in Yorkshire. Slingsby enclosed a part of the spring and created the first Spa resort in England – Harrogate.
While the practice of bathing in hot or cold springs for “medicinal purposes” was not a new thing, it actually can be traced back to the prehistoric times, enclosing a spring for communal, medicinal purposes was.
In the 1770s, bathing became a commonly suggested treatment from physicians and by the mid-1800s, European spa’s started the concept of bathing aside from drinking these medicinal treatments. And they also incorporated “treatments” in their spas – including steaming in vapor, drinking hot water and relaxing in a cool room.
And in the 1900s, spas began the mixture of strict diet and exercise along with treatments to create a holistic approach to well-being.
So if the spa industry can weather two world wars, multiple economic recessions and a major depression, I think we can muster through this. What do you think?

Last night on the news I was horrified to find out that snakes are sneaking in as unwanted guests all around Dallas homes, thanks to the above average temperatures here. I HATE snakes, seriously they are my biggest fear.
This post is not about my fear of snakes but it is about their venom. A couple of years ago snake venom began to appear in lip “plumbing” products and anti-aging cosmetics. And a new facial even emerged in some high-end spas, containing snake venom.
Well for those of you out there that would rather keep snakes and everything snake-like away from your face – there is a new formulation that mimics the anti-aging benefits of this slithering foe.
A cosmetic company in Canada has formulated a protein that mimics the activity of venom protein found in the Temple Viper.
The properties found in snake venom are said to have tremendous results in the anti-aging department. Snake venom cream is said to reduce fine lines around the eyes and lips and until now people (especially celebrities) couldn’t get enough.
The Canadian company claims their new formulation is safer and easier to use and more wallet-friendly than its cosmetic procedure counter part – botox.
So now that you have an alternative to botox that doesn’t include putting venom on wrinkles, are you more likely to purchase this snake free alternative? Have you tried snake venom cosmetics? I really would love to know……….

I LOVE lavender! And I know I am not the only one, our Lavender and Calming Blend (which is made with pure French lavender) are some of our top sellers. But until recently I had no idea you could use lavender to cook with.
Christine, our owner, recently went to California and came back with some lavender cheese. I have to say I had never heard of that.
But I did some simple digging around and found out lavender is an incredibly versatile herb for cooking and in today’s upscale restaurants, edible flowers such as lavender are making a comeback for both flavor and appearance enhancements.
And I thought lavender was just for relaxation But lavender is used to enhance cakes, cheese, bread and my favorite new recipe, lavender crème brulee. You can even steep lavender and add it to gin or vodka for a twist on the traditional cocktail.
If you are brave enough to experiment be careful, adding too much lavender can be like eating perfume and will make your dish bitter. A little goes a long way.
Also, lavender is a staple in all kinds of spa and natural beauty products like soap, lip balm and you guessed it, candles
Have you had any edible lavender products? Let us know what you thought…….. I’m dying to find that cheese somewhere in Texas!
