No matter if your just starting your practice or have been in business for a number of years, we all need a helping hand from time to time. Both government and private grants are a form of alternate funding for start up businesses or ones looking to expand and the beauty of grants is that, unlike loans, grants usually do not need to be paid back! Now that’s beautiful!
Many grants are set up for certain types of businesses, such as woman-owned, veteran-owned, minority-owned, or over 65-owned. Here’s some that we thought our holistic health business owners could take advantage of.
- Federal or Government Grants - These are typically the most difficult to find and qualify for. There are no grants for general start-ups, but many are offered for specific types of businesses, such as those in health related research or green initiatives. So if you got a green spa…this may be something worth looking in to. Grants.gov offers a comprehensive search tool.
- Private Grants - These are offered for all types of businesses, including start-ups. It is just a matter of taking the time to do the research, fill out the applications and making sure that the grant is legitimate. We’ve all seen the guy with the question marks all over his suit promising thousands of dollars in free money right? Beware of any grant or grant finding agency that charges money for their services; they are generally scams. If you have any concerns about a grant that is offered, contact your local Better Business Bureau to check it out.
