Purchase a Programmable Thermostat- Though you will invest a little more money upfront, the thermostat will end up paying for itself in energy savings. In summer, program the thermostat to shut down the air conditioning when you leave for the day and to turn back on 30 minutes before you get back. You should also program the thermostat to use less cooling when you go to sleep at night. For the winter months, do just the opposite! Visit Energy Star to browse energy saving thermostats and try out their programmable thermostat calculator to calculate your savings!
