Looking for a different way to soothe your aches and pains? Try a hot stone massage! Many spas and even nail salons offer hot stones to melt your stress away. The stones can be heated up to 135 degrees and can be placed on the body (separated by a sheet or towel) or massaged into sore muscle groups. Most spas offer 60-90 minute sessions that incorporate the stones into your traditional full body massage.

Check out these benefits of using hot stones:

*A decrease in chronic pain

*An increase in circulation

*An even deeper, more effective massage

*A decrease in both stress and anxiety

*Back pain relief

Are You Having an Eco-Friendly Summer?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Looking for ways to make your summer a little more eco-friendly? Check out these 4 tips:

1) Turn off the lights- Instead of wasting electricity, open those blinds and illuminate your home or office with natural sunlight.

2) Take a trip to the farmer’s market- Summer is one of the best times to visit your local farmers market. Take advantage of the opportunity to buy your produce fresh and in-season.

3) Start your own garden- Get the kids involved in growing herbs, fruits, and vegetables right from home!

4) Leave your car at home- Save gas and the planet by walking or riding your bike short distances. For longer distances, check out public transportation.

8 Tips for Smart Snacking

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Wouldn’t you love if you could eat more often and weigh less? You can! Check out these 8 tips for smart snacking:

1) Don’t wait too long before eating- Instead of helping you lose weight, this causes your blood sugar to drop and contributes to overeating.

2) Count the calories- Your snacks should not have as many calories as your standard meal! Count out 100-150 calories for each snack.

3) Stop multi-tasking- Instead of mindlessly eating while you’re watching TV or sitting at the computer, take the time to actually sit down and enjoy your food. Snacking with distractions can cause overeating.

4) Plan it out- Personally, the times I eat unhealthy are the times I’m all out of groceries! Don’t wait until you get so hungry that you grab any and everything. Plan out your portions and pack your snacks ahead of time!

5) Run away from trans-fats- Check the labels and stay away from packaged cookies and snack cakes. Trans-fats can lead to high cholesterol.

6) Drink more water- Many times we confuse hunger with thirst. Drink a glass of water before and after each meal and before deciding to indulge in a snack.

7) Don’t eat a carbohydrate alone- Instead of just having pretzels, chips, or an apple, pair with protein or a healthy fat.

8 ) Take it out of the box- Do not eat straight from the box, bag, or can. Measure your portions and put in a snack bag. It’s too tempting to grab just one more.

Spa America Tour- Update from Skip

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

“Dear Spa America Tour Sponsors,

First let me say sorry for not getting you this list in a more timely manner. My excuse is that it has been crazy busy out here between the rather lengthy visits with each spa, the travel, and the writing and I am realizing that I will have to pace myself a little better so that I can serve everyone.

If you’ve been following the blogs you know that I am stuck in Sonoma CA for a few days while the mechanic sorts out an electrical problem on the Spa America bike. I guess the good news is that I should be able to catch up a little with my writing and communications.

Once I am back on the road I am heading north to Seattle so if you have someone that you need me to visit between here and there please send a letter of invitation to them and copy me and I will do my best to make the visit happen. The Tour has been well received at every spa that I have visited. People seem excited about the tour, both in person and online.”

If you would like Skip to visit your spa, shoot him an email at [email protected]. Follow Skip’s blog and Spa America Tour here.

4 Sources of Caffeine- Which do you prefer?

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

In moderation, caffeine can be a healthy energy booster. Caffeine not only increases energy and lifts mood, but improves endurance and blood circulation.

Check out these 4 sources of caffeine:

1) Coffee- Keep your coffee simple. If you must splurge on a cappuccino, be sure to ask for nonfat milk so you aren’t adding extra calories!

2) Chocolate- Cocoa Beans are a natural source of caffeine but keep in mind the fat content. Moderation is key!

3) Black Tea- This is one of the healthiest sources of caffeine. Brew this tea without the sugar so you’re not compromising your calories.

4) Guarana- It boasts twice as much caffeine than the average coffee bean. Guarana can be found in many energy drinks and health supplements. Check the nutrition facts before consuming as many energy drinks contain high amounts of sugar.

How do you get your caffeine fix?
