5 Green Gift Wrapping Tips for Mother’s Day

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

With Mother’s Day coming on May 8th, let’s not forget Mother Earth. A little creativity goes a long way and mom will appreciate your thoughtfulness!

Here are 5 Green Gift Wrapping Tips:

*Purchase a gift with sustainable packaging- Here at Scandle, our gift sets use packaging made from the Romblon leaf. The plant, grown in the Western Pacific islands, has fragrant leaves used as an ingredient for cooking custards, puddings, and herbal teas. These leaves are also weaved for our reusable gift tote bag!

*Map it out- Old maps are great for gift wrapping. You can also mark favorite spots or place stickers on cities where you’ve traveled together!

*Gift your gift- Wrap your gift with another one! Use creative packaging like scarves, blankets, buckets, or wicker baskets that mom will use again.

*Use household items- Instead of throwing away old wallpaper, magazines, and shopping bags, make a collage for wrapping.

*Natural toppers- Instead of buying plastic baubles, top with natural flowers, leaves, or even cinnamon sticks!

Only 2 Days left to purchase a Scandle in April! This month $1 of each sale is supporting the Arbor Day Foundation.

7 Tips for an Environmental Detox

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Springtime is notorious for detoxification. We’ve all heard about cleansing your body to promote a healthy lifestyle and contribute to overall well-being but what about detoxifying your environment? Your environment affects your mind, body, and emotions. Therefore, it is important to remove stressful factors and rid your environment of toxins!

Here are 7 tips to detoxify your environment:

*Avoid cooking food in plastic- Cooking in plastic made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) can be very harmful. Use iron, glass, or ceramic pots/containers to prepare your meals.

*Use safe personal care products- Check the labels on your shampoo, soap, lotion, and cosmetics. Natural ingredients are usually those you can pronounce!

*Throw out the fabric softener- Toxins in fabric softener can cause respiratory problems, headaches, and insomnia . Opt for natural herbal sachets instead.

*Filter your water- If consuming tap water, make sure you filter the water to remove lead and aluminum.

*No smoking!- Do not allow smoking inside your home. Second hand smoke can cause the same diseases as direct smoking.

*Take control of your emotions- Ban dramatic friends or co-workers from your personal space, you don’t need unnecessary stress!

*Decrease electronic use- Power off the cell phone, laptop, stereo, and television and take time to meditate or read.

Scandles are also a great way to detoxify your environment and decrease stress! Purchase in April and we’ll contribute $1 of each sale to the Arbor Day Foundation!

Earth Day Countdown- 1 Day!

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Today’s eco-tip:

Switch Your Candles. When you light candles on Earth Day, make sure they are safe for the environment! Most traditional candles are made with paraffin, a petroleum based product. Paraffin contains dangerous toxins and carcinogens which are harmful for you and the environment and produce soot that coats walls, ceilings, and furniture. A much healthier alternative is a soy based candle like the Scandle Body Massage Candle. Soy candles are clean burning, biodegradable, and water soluble. They also burn 50% longer than paraffin candles which is more cost effective! Also, make sure to check the packaging so that your aren’t contributing to waste!

Purchase a Scandle this month and we will contribute $1 of each sale to the Arbor Day Foundation! Remember to celebrate Arbor Day on April 29th!

Earth Day Countdown- 2 Days!

Today’s eco-tip:

Invest in Rechargeable Batteries. Ditching disposable batteries is a great way to reduce your environmental impact. Rechargeable batteries reduce impact on nonrenewable resources, air, and water pollution. By investing in rechargeable batteries, you’re contributing to less waste and reducing the energy required for transportation and packaging! Unlike alkaline batteries, rechargeable batteries can be recycled. Visit Call2Recycle to find a recycling location near you.

Green Your Car. Our automobiles have a huge impact on the environment. Here are some quick tips to make your car more environmentally friendly:

*Carpool- Going to the same place? Ride with a friend or co-worker! This will cut down on fuel, emissions, and save you money!

*Inflate your tires- Low tire pressure contributes to low gas mileage.

*Drive at a constant, slower speed- This will decrease the amount of fuel your engine uses and produce less emissions.

*Plan your route- Plan out your stops for the day in advance so you aren’t acquiring unnecessary mileage. This will also save fuel and cut your CO2 emissions
